My $42 cup of coffee

By Jim Dalrymple

Iím sitting in Southern California today in sunny 70-80 degree temperatures, while my hometown in Nova Scotia gets pounded with 2-3 feet of snow. Sitting across from Disneyland I figured I had it made, until I realized there isnít a Starbucks or other suitable coffee shop within miles of where I am.

When I arrived yesterday I went for a long walk looking for a Starbucks to have a nice cup of coffee and relaxóI didnít find one. After supper, I walked the other way, but still no luck.

Frustrated, this morning I walked further, passing Disneyland and the Anaheim convention center, but still no coffee. I asked a couple of people on the street passing out flyers, but they didnít speak EnglishóI in turn didnít take a flyer.

When I went back to the hotel I asked the lady at the front desk where the nearest Starbucks was located. She looked at me with a blank stare and said she would be right back. When she returned she said there was one right outside the Main Place mallóperfect! Where is the Main Place Mall? About a $20 cab ride away!

You have got to be kidding me! I am sitting next to the gates of Disneyland and Starbucks didnít think people would want to buy a coffee here?!

After much consideration, I broke down and took a cab to the mall and ran to the Starbucks. The woman behind the counter must have thought I was some kind of lunatic when I asked for my coffee because she just giggled the whole time.

I sat peacefully inside Starbucks reading the paper and drinking the largest cup of coffee I have ever purchased. Then I had a wonderful ideaóI would sit outside, lean back, drink my coffee and have a smokeómmmmmmmmm, doesnít get any better than this.

Except I must have dropped my cigarettes getting out of the cab. So, I looked a the guy next to me as I held my lighter and fumbled around looking for my smokesóhe gave me one and I calmed down with a coffee and a cigarette for the first time in two days.

So after $40 for a cab and $2 for the coffee, I am satisfied.

Now, what am I going to do tomorrow?
