They grow up so fast

By Jim Dalrymple

Twelve years ago today I was a father for the first time. I didn’t understand how much it would completely change my life, but boy have things changed. Monique and I gave up our freedom to be responsible adults; parents charged with raising a child, showing her the ins and outs of life.

I’m not so sure I was ready for the challenge back then. But then again being a parent is probably one of the toughest jobs there is, so I’m not sure that any of us are ever ready for the trials and tribulations that accompany that responsibility.

All-in-all Nicole is a wonderful girl. She is entering a time that rebellion is cool and arguments come as often as the next conversation. I know she has a good heart and loves us as much as we love her, but I wish she would pass this hateful teenage phase that she seems to have entered into early.

We just finished opening her presents and she is thrilled with the loot from her brother and us — which means that we should be safe from the rebellion for a little while. Seriously, there is nothing better than seeing the happy look on your child’s face when they open a present that they really want.

Happy Birthday Nicole. We love you!
