Zakk Wylde’s Mafia is bone-crushing

There is no doubt that Zakk Wylde is the best guitarist playing today and one of the most prolific recording artists too. I’ve read quite a bit about how some people are disappointed with Zakk’s newest effort, Mafia — criticism that I just think are completely uncalled for.
Putting aside my obvious bias of how good Zakk is, the criticism I hear is that the song-writing isn’t as good as in some of the older albums like 1919 or Sonic Brew. First of all, that’s just crap, but more importantly I’ve learned that each time I buy a Zakk album to expect the unexpected — that holds true with Mafia, as well.
Mafia is not better or worse than anything else Zakk has done in the past, it’s just different. I find it quite similar to The Blessed Hellride without as many pinch harmonics.
Zakk’s genius is not just the fact that he can rip out your insides with a blazingly fast solo, it’s also the simplicity of his music and how he makes it so heavy. Look at the chord progression of “Fire It Up” as an example. Very simple, but so incredibly heavy you can’t help but want to pick up a guitar and start jamming.
Mafia is bone-crushing, no doubt about it. Those that don’t like Mafia will be back after listening a bit more saying they love it.
