What a crazy trip to San Francisco

Today should have been just like any other trip I take to San Francisco – easy. But no, today was a mess from the start, although I must say I am here, so I guess everything turned out for the best in the end.

The day started at 3:00 when Continental called and said my flight from Halifax to Newark had been delayed by an hour. That’s not good news since I have an hour and a half to make my connection – that includes getting through customs and back through security. Being an Elite member I can take the fast track lines, but even those have been busy lately.

So, we get to sleep an extra hour, right – wrong. Continental said I should still go to the airport on time, just in case the flight leaves. Huh? Is it late or not?

I went to the airport and waited for an hour in line to check in and moved three or four people. Just as it was about to be my turn, I grabbed my passport and realized I had taken my daughters instead of mine. I made a frantic call home and asked Monique to bring me my passport. Believe it or not, she made the 15-minute journey before I made it to the desk to check in.

The girl at the counter was friendly, considering the bad day she must have been having. She gave me my ticket and booked me on a later flight just in case I didn’t make it.

When I got to Newark, I raced to customs – the guy didn’t ask me a single question, stamped my form and off I went to security. Luckily the line was empty and I passed through only stopping while security confiscated my lighters – apparently you can’t take lighters on a plane anymore.

I made it to the gate as they were making the final boarding announcement, took my seat and gladly accepted a nice cup of coffee. The flight itself was pretty smooth, but the rest of the day had its share of bumps.
