The new heavyweight of the NHL?
Posted by: | CommentsEvery new hockey season brings with it a new batch of young energetic players that want to make their mark in the league. Some, like Sidney Crosby, do it with their goal scoring skills, while others rely on their fists.
This year, three new players are making their mark. Fortunately for me, the Bruins have one of them with the promotion of Colton Orr from the minors. The other — 6’4†225lb Brian McGrattan — plays for the Ottawa Senators, but nobody can compare to the “Boogeyman.â€
Minnesota Wild’s 6’7†270lb Derek Boogaard has taken on all comers and handily beaten everyone so far. Realistically, how could he not beat his competition — this man is an absolute monster.
I watched a few clips on the ‘Net today of Boogaard’s fights and I just don’t see any way that anyone is going to be able to beat him. We’ve had some great fighters in the league over the years including the likes of Bob Probert, Troy Crowder and Stu Grimson. Boogaard definitely has some big boots to fill, but I think he can do it.
McGrattan’s claim to fame so far this year is knocking down Tie Domi the other night. Tie is a great fighter and I think he could do better given another opportunity with McGrattan.
Colton Orr has also been doing well, taking on all comers. I don’t think Orr has really lost a battle yet, but his closest match was probably against McGrattan, which ended up in a draw.
Lest We Forget
Posted by: | CommentsOne of my biggest pet peeves is the way society chooses not to remember the fallen soldiers in the wars of the last century. People choose to go about their business every November 11, without recognizing the sacrifice so many men and women around the world made for our freedom.
Every November 11, Monique and I take the kids to the local ceremony here in Bedford — today will be no different. The number of veterans decreases each year and the number of names called out from the honor role increases by the same amount.
I think it’s important to show Nicole and Michael that there is a reason we can live like we do. Literally millions of people have died to give us our way of life — they need to respect that.
Today, I am proud to be Canadian and proud of the sacrifice my grandparents and their families made for our freedom.
A couple of minutes of silence and remembrance is a small price to pay.
My second book launch in two years
Posted by: | CommentsThis afternoon Monique, the kids and I went to my brother-in-laws book launch. We went to support him and his new book, but we also bought a few for Christmas presents and had him sign them.
His new book is called “Chronicle of our Time,” a photographic book based on events in Nova Scotia. This is Len’s second book in just over a year — last year Len released “Nova Scotia Landmarks: Portrait of a Province from the Air.”
The first book were aerial photographs of Nova Scotia — very well done. It was a bestseller at Chapters and of course, the local bookstores were selling them like crazy.
Len and his family stopped over after the launch and we all had some pizza and beer. It was a lot of fun.
Michael’s math teacher can’t count
Posted by: | CommentsMichael’s favorite subject is definitely not math — turns out it isn’t his math teachers either. Michael brought home his test today that he studied really hard and was disappointed with his B-.
Monique took a look at the test and noticed that the teacher miss counted by 10 points. What does this mean? Michael deserves an A+ instead of a B-. He was much happier when we told him that.
We put a note in with his school work so the teacher could see it tomorrow.
