Skateboarding dog

General 2 Comments »

Okay, I’ve seen people on America’s Home Videos and other shows put their dogs on skateboards and push them to get a laugh, but this is different.

This dog not only pushes himself along, he actually steers the skateboard and when he is about to crash he jumps off. This is one smart dog — looks like he’s having a good time too.

Twiggy eats my sandwich

I get no respect. I work hard, so when I sit down to eat to a simple sandwich for lunch I expect a little privacy. Apparently, Twiggy doesn’t think I deserve the privacy or the sandwich.

Twiggy is a really intense dog. She loves to play ball or tug or anything else and when she does, she is completely focused on whatever the game is — she has injured herself for the game.

There are very few times in a day that she ever likes to cuddle. One of those times is if you have food. Sometimes, she is very friendly … too friendly.

Yesterday, I was doing some work and having a sandwich. Twiggy went from sitting in front of to coming up on the couch and staring at me, to pawing my arms and laying on my chest. She finally did get the sandwich.

The squirrels are ganging up on Twiggy

Our seven-year-old Border Collie Twiggy has been having an ongoing battle with a squirrel that lives in a tree just off the back deck. We leave a few crackers out for the squirrel and Twiggy feels it’s her responsibility to make sure the squirrel doesn’t take them. Lately, the squirrel has brought in reinforcements.

Twiggy lies patiently watching the squirrel and then pounces, chasing it off the deck. Lately though, the squirrel brought another one with her to distract Twiggy so she can get to the food. Twiggy is fine with one, but as soon as the second one shows up Twiggy just short-circuits and goes crazy.

While one eats, the other one runs on the deck railing and in the trees, chattering the entire time keeping Twiggy attention. Then they switch out and the other one eats. Sometimes Twiggy gets so tried she just plops down and pants.

Today three squirrels came and I thought Twiggy’s heart was going to pop. She was running from one end of the deck to the other trying to catch one of them. She never gives up totally, but they really made her work tonight.

My dog took the site down

I know how messed up this sounds, but my dog Twiggy managed to take the site down for several hours today. A thunder storm overnight drove the poor dog crazy and she ended up in the server room downstairs.

Like most dogs, loud noises like Fireworks and storms sends them scurrying for cover. When the storm started Twiggy managed to get herself under the small shelf I keep the server on, tore out some cables and took everything offline.

We found her this morning, still under the server caught up in cables that had her trapped. It took a couple of minutes to get her unhooked from everything and then get the server back online.

Hot, hot and a dog show

Our heat-wave hit yesterday as promised. The highs certainly didn’t disappoint as it went over 110º at times in the afternoon heat and humidity — unfortunately the promised respite didn’t materialize today.

Despite wide predictions of thunderstorms overnight a return to livable temperatures on Sunday, we are still sweltering in the heat and humidity. We went up to Monique’s parents house today to help her father with a printer problem and to hook up a stereo component for him. The kids took the time to go for a swim in their pool and cool off a bit, but their has been no relief for Monique and I.

After we left there, we stopped off at the local park to see a dog show. Actually it was more of an exhibition, all intended for fun, no real competition. Lots of cool dogs, although not a Border Collie in the mix at all — kind of strange considering how smart they are.

The dogs did relay races and agility competitions, darting in and out of obstacles. Some of course, did better than others, but it was a lot of fun watching. Unfortunately, we were in the heat for the hour or so we watched — I was just cooked by the time I got home, but it was worth it.

Everyone is doing there own thing right now, trying to cool down. I have another feature due tomorrow, so I’ve been working this weekend, but the break this afternoon was nice.

Twiggy meets Rocky Raccoon

Life 2 Comments »

Our seven-year-old Border Collie, Twiggy, has a new friend – a raccoon! While Monique and I were in San Francisco my parents moved into the house to look after the kids and told us the story of the raccoon coming to visit. Last night he came back and tonight he was on the deck again.

I was sitting in the family room doing some work when I saw something moving on the deck by the sliding doors. Sure enough there was the raccoon. Twiggy was furious and started jumping at the door and barking, growling and showing her teeth in the most vicious way she could.

The raccoon stood there and stared at her. The only thing that could have been more insulting to the poor dog was if the raccoon had of yawned – it was kind of funny.

Now Twiggy is laying by the door barking at nothing, waiting for the raccoon to come back. Every once in a while she will bark and scare the hell out of Monique and I, which I’m sure she finds equally as funny.

Twiggy is doing much better

It’s been a week of worrying and wondering what was happening to Twiggy, but she is finally getting back to normal. After eating some of the kids treats, then spending days on a restricted diet and a trip to the vet, she is running around happy again.
